Signs You’re Carrying Trauma
You might think you’ve moved on. You might not even remember what happened.
But what the mind sets down, the body tends to keep. It shows up later, in ways that don’t look like trauma at all. They look like you.
If you’ve ever wondered why you feel anxious, shut down, or in pain when nothing is wrong, this list is a place to start. Read it slowly. Notice which lines you don’t want to be true.
In the body
Panic or anxiety that arrives from nowhere, when nothing is wrong.
Tension that never fully leaves. Jaw, shoulders, stomach, chest.
Pain or health issues doctors can’t explain and tests don’t find.
Exhaustion that sleep doesn’t touch.
Holding your breath without noticing.
Trouble relaxing, even when you finally have the time.
In relationships
The same relationship, ending the same way, with different people.
Shutting down when someone gets close.
Trouble trusting people who’ve given you no reason not to.
People-pleasing. Saying yes when everything in you says no.
Feeling alone in a room full of people who care about you.
In how you move through the day
Always slightly braced, as if something is about to go wrong.
Overthinking everything. Replaying conversations for days.
Feeling numb when you should feel something, or too much when you shouldn’t.
Reactions that are bigger than the moment, and knowing it while it’s happening.
Getting close to something good and finding a way to lose it.
Living in survival mode when life is calm.
What this list is, and isn’t
None of these on their own means anything. Everyone has a bad week.
But if you read this and felt your chest tighten, or counted, or thought “that’s just how I am,” it may be worth paying attention to. Those aren’t personality traits. They’re a nervous system that learned to protect you, and never got the signal that it could stop.
That’s not weakness. It’s a system doing its job long after the job was done.
Where to go from here
You don’t have to book anything.
If the body signs are what stood out, the free anxiety grounding practice helps your system settle.
If the pain lines did, start with the pain practice.
